Hi, my name is Lacie Ballard. I am currently a junior at EOU studying multidisciplinary studies with an ESOL endorsement. I am pretty excited to graduate in the next few years and get started on my career I would love to teach kindergarten or first grade.
My hobbies range from reading to riding my horses. I really enjoy reading the Twilight series and am looking forward to the next book. I just recently got a new Jack Russell puppy so she consumes much of my time currently--I named her Daisy! I also really love riding my horses up in the mountains, for the most part.
Reading didn't start so easily for me. I can recall in about the first grade, I had great difficultly learning the alphabet and was placed in special group. Luckily, I excelled and in later years of Elementary school I was placed in more advanced reading groups. Starting in Second grade to my Senior year of high school my school district had a reading program called Accelerated Reader or AR for short. Basically students had to read a book with a given value of points and take computer based tests on the book. I mostly didn't enjoy it, because it made reading seem forced. In my later years of high school I began to enjoy reading Nicholas Sparks novels and still do. I also enjoy reading the for mentioned Twilight series. I for the most part enjoy reading these types of books because the are pretty entertaining and easily understood.
My dad mostly just reads the newspaper or informational books on horse training or riding. He chooses to read these books so he can stay informed on current events and to further his knowledge on equestrian. My older brother also enjoys reading informative books mostly on wilderness areas which include survival guides and maps. He enjoys reading these books because he really enjoys being outdoors and hiking. Most of my friends really enjoy reading fictional books such as Nicholas Sparks novels, basically because they find them entertaining. I mostly can relate to my friends answers as I do not really enjoy reading informational books. However, like my father I do enjoy reading the newspaper from time-to-time so I can stay informed on current events.

Hi Lacie, thanks for the comment! I haven't read the Twilight series, I'm sure eventually I will give in and read them :-) I told myself after Harry Potter that I would be done with magic and fantasy books (but what fun would that be?!).
I too, love horses. I have been atop a horse for most of my life I think! I competed for a long time through school, but eventually college and sports caught up with me and I just didn't have time for everything. I've always said though, the moment I graduate, my gift to myself will be a horse!
I also like Nicholas Sparks books, I read a couple of them this last summer.
I understand exactly what you mean when you say reading felt forced. I think thats why I strayed from it for so many years.
Best of luck with this year and working toward your major! Teaching is such a rewarding career, and how fun to teach kindergarten!
Lacie-
Glad to meet somebody else who's enjoying Twilight like I am! I'm currently just starting book four. They're completely intoxicating. I find myself getting so wrapped up in the story that I lose focus on the present moment. Bella especially sparks all sorts of emotions and reactions in me....not always good ones either.
I love that you were able to turn your difficulty with reading into something you excelled at! Very impressive in overcoming that obstacle. As a kindergarden or first grade teacher, perhaps this could give you a better grasp on how to teach your students that struggle with reading as well.
I remember the days of AR! I had almost forgotten, thanks for sparking the memory :)
Best of luck with your degree!
Lacie,
My Mom is completely into the Twilight books, I've yet to read them, but my boys read some of them.
I also love horses & Nicholas Sparks! Which book was your favorite? I can't decide if I liked The Wedding or the Notebook more. They were both amazing.
I am also a huge Twilight fan! The vampire bug began in our office and quickly spread like wild fire! With so much chatter going on regarding "Twilight" we had patients coming up to us telling that they too were reading the series by Stephenie Meyer. Even I, the mother, got my teenage girls hooked and we are planning on a trip to Forks, Washington in the near future.
OK, I'm joining the club. There are some books I gobble because I can't put them down. The Twilight books are gobblers. It's bad for me because I need my sleep! I'm waiting to start the fourth book so that I'll have reading to look forward to. Nancy
Lacie,
I got to read a lot of the classics growing up and really enjoyed reading. But my wife said that she never really read those kinds of books because she "had" to read them in school. I think that she may share your experience with being forced to read and having it turn you off to reading a little bit.
